YLIB group gathered in Piteå, focus on Oulu and future Games

A week ago Young Leaders in Barents (YLIB) group came together in Piteå for a weekend meeting that combined planning for upcoming Barents Games, developing new ideas and simply enjoying time together in a relaxed and open atmosphere. YLIB program gathers together 18-25 years old participants from Finland, Sweden and Norway to develop their skills in sports management and leadership and Barents Games offers an arena to young people to actively contribute in sports and sport events.

At the heart of the meeting was the preparation for future events. The group worked closely on plans for the Barents Summer Games 2026 in Oulu, discussing participants’ roles, responsibilities and practical arrangements for the event. At the same time, the focus extended further ahead, as Piteå will host the Games after Oulu.

Discussions, ideas and planning the future

Throughout the weekend, participants engaged in active discussions about what YLIB means to them and how the programme can continue to evolve. They shared experiences, exchanged ideas and reflected on how to make the most of their skills in upcoming events.

The programme also included expert sessions and workshops on topics such as youth participation, marketing and event development which are all closely connected to the future of Barents Games.

As a part of the program, Anna Bogren represented Piteå Summer Games and delivered a lecture on how the event has developed over time, as well as how its marketing and communication have evolved. This provided valuable insights for the group as they continue to shape future Barents Game

Discovering Piteå as a future host city

The meeting provided an opportunity to get to know Piteå as a future host city. Participants visited local venues and explored the surroundings and activities, gaining a better understanding of what the city can offer for upcoming events. These experiences helped the group already start visualising their roles and contributions in future Games.

Connections, networking and having fun

Alongside planning and discussions, the weekend highlighted the importance of connection and community. Informal moments, shared meals, and time spent together created space for building friendships and strengthening the group’s team spirit.

The meeting offered valuable opportunities for networking, exchanging perspectives and growing as a cross-border community of young leaders.

From Oulu to what’s next

The gathering in Piteå reinforced the shared direction of YLIB: young people are not only taking part in events, but actively shaping their content and future.

As preparations continue, the focus now turns to Oulu and the Barents Summer Games 2026, where YLIB members will play a key role while already laying the groundwork for the events that will follow.
