Inspiring visits to BSG26 Oulu and BWG27 Piteå
Over the past few days, representatives from Barents Sports have visited Oulu and Piteå to continue preparations for two major upcoming events: Barents Summer Games 2026 (BSG26) in Oulu and Barents Winter Games 2027 (BWG27) in Piteå.
The site visits confirmed one thing: the future of Barents sports cooperation is in excellent hands.

Oulu 2026 – Sport in the Heart of the European Capital of Culture
Ouluhalli, Oulu
As the largest city in Northern Finland and a dynamic Arctic hub, Oulu will host a truly unique edition of the Barents Summer Games. In 2026, Oulu will also carry the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture, meaning the Games will take place alongside a vibrant cultural program and city-wide celebrations.
Imagine stepping out of a competition venue and into a summer festival atmosphere — perhaps even catching the sound of Finnish rock echoing through the streets.
Unique Urban Athlete Experience
A dedicated downtown area will be created for participants to gather, dine, and experience what Oulu has to offer. This central meeting place will strengthen the social dimension of the Games — a core value of Barents cooperation — where athletes, coaches, and leaders can connect beyond competition.

World-Class Venues
During our visit, we toured the impressive Ouluhalli, which will host boxing, powerlifting, boccia, and wrestling. The venue offers outstanding indoor facilities perfectly suited for high-level competition.
We also visited Raatti Stadium, where athletics will take place. Raatti is a remarkable sports complex featuring a stadium, swimming facilities, and restaurant services. Walking through its halls, we could see historic images from past sporting events — including the iconic “Kalottkampen” competitions — reminding us of the strong sporting traditions in the region.
BSG26 will combine sport, culture, and Arctic identity in a way that truly reflects the Barents spirit.

Piteå 2027 – A Winter Gathering by the Arctic Sea
Pite Havsbad in the northern lights
From summer vibrancy to winter magic — our journey included a visit to Piteå, Sweden, host of Barents Winter Games 2027.
At the heart of the event will be Pite Havsbad, which will serve as the official Games Village for athletes, coaches, and officials. Traditionally known as a summer destination, Piteå transforms into something equally spectacular during winter.
One Unified Games Village
Pite Havsbad offers a unique opportunity to gather everyone in one place throughout the Games. With accommodation, dining, conference facilities, and large halls suitable for ceremonies — including the Opening Ceremony — the setting creates a strong sense of community and togetherness.
Beyond competition, participants can enjoy swimming facilities, bowling, golf simulators, padel courts, spa experiences, and even snowmobile safaris along the frozen coastline.
We believe this unified concept will make BWG27 a truly special experience — strengthening friendships and Barents identity across borders.
“Pite Havsbad offers a unique opportunity to gather everyone in one place throughout the Games.”
Top-Level Winter Facilities
Competitions in cross-country skiing, biathlon, and ski orienteering will take place at Lindbäcksstadion, a modern ski facility offering excellent infrastructure for both athletes and spectators. The area also provides well-prepared cross-country tracks and alpine skiing opportunities, ensuring high-quality sporting conditions.
Anne and Vera stopped in Kemi to visit the chairman of BSC and BSCF Osmo Happonen
We also had productive meetings with Piteå Municipality, a committed and forward-looking partner for the Games. Their engagement and support further strengthen our confidence in delivering a memorable Winter Games in 2027.
Looking Ahead
These visits reinforced the strength of regional cooperation across the Barents region. From Oulu’s vibrant cultural energy to Piteå’s Arctic winter unity, both host cities are preparing to deliver Games that combine sport, friendship, and northern identity.
We are truly looking forward to welcoming athletes, coaches, officials, and partners to:
Barents Summer Games 2026 in Oulu

The Arctic spirit continues to grow — and we cannot wait to share it with you.
